.MAP
How To Add Turrets To Vehicles And Reposition Them

12 posts in this topic

Requirements:

  • Jtag or Dev Kit
  • Ascension
  • Halo: Reach installed to USB or HDD

Description:

Today im going to teach you how to add turrets and reposition them afterwards. Especially the repositioning part should be pretty helpful cause it never was mentioned in an already existing tutorial.

Adding The Turrets:

1: Open your .map in ascension and select the hlmt tag of a vehicle with a turret. Recommend you choose a vehicle that isnt available on the map by default (troop warthog, unused falcon varients)

2: Now select an unused variant and copy the child object offset.

3: Now open the hlmt of the vehicle you want to add the turrets to. Paste the copied offset into the child obects box and change the block count if you want to. The block count will determine the amount of turrets. Ill change the block count to 3 because i want to add 3 turrets to my banshee. Press both save buttons afterwards.

4: After reopening the vehicle it should look like this. swap the turrets to objetcs of your liking. Now this step is important in order to reposition them later on: change the parent marker to an other one from the dopdown list that isnt used by the vehicle. I usually take really strange ones like "bomb" or "golf_club" cause they are easy to remember. Repeat this for every child object chunk. Make sure that no turrets have the same parent marker!

NOTE: You dont have to change the parent marker of a turret if the old marker has "turret" or "anti_infantry" in its name.

This is how its supposed to look like when youre done. As you can see i changed the marker to "colorblind" and swapped the turret to an elite. Remember to save after editing things in a chunk!

Repositioning The turrets:

1: Open the mode tag of your vehicle and go to markers.

2: Probably you already know how to reposition them and noticed that added turrets dont have markers. This is why we have to make a new one for your turret. As far as know its impossible to create new ones so the only way is to overwrite an already existing one. Choose an unimportant one from the list. I recommend you replace a "fx_" or a "garbage_" marker.

Remember the turret marker from earlier? Insert it into the name field of your unwanted marker.

3: Now reposition the turret as usual by messing around with the instance values.

After:

Create a marker for every turret your vehicle has and remember to use the right markers.

yeah I know. but usually people dont read halo3 tutorials when they want to mod reach and i received many questions on repositioning turrets, so i thought it would be a good idea to write a new reach tutorial. do you want me to give credit?

i dont care for credit, besides you even want to go there i wasnt the first to even do mine, halodude was the one that had told me how and it went from there. its sad few people dont realize that the two games are almost the exact same though, cause the tutorials for halo 3, especially the ones i made cause they were generalized, actually work in both games.

Alright, I'm having a little trouble moving the turret around as normal, can you post a pic of what the coordinates would be like if you had the turrets facing out to the right and left side?

repositioning them is really easy, but changing the rotation can be a b****. halo doesnt use the normal rotation system in degrees, that you probably know, but instead it uses quaternions (at least that´s what i read somewhere). this site could help you: Link. if you ask me, the best way to find the correct rotation values is to insert 0,5 or -0,5 in either i, j, k or w and poke changes. if none of them leads to a satisfying result, start combining them (e.g./ i=0,5 / j=0 / k= -0,5 / w=1).

Ok, thank you. I'll try it out latter when I get home. I'll post here if I run into any more problems.

Also, I had a few other questions, I PMed you earlier with them.
