Those were most likely just done with a hex editor or a build of Assembly that got passed around (I don't think chrisco made all of those). Since I don't have any plugins generated for H4 yet, I couldn't really tell you.

modding .maps in hex isnt as hard as you think when its simpy things like tag swaps. all you do is get the ident and replace it with another. hardest part is finding out the idents

How would one even go about doing that? Snooping in campaign saves/feature.films?

no, in hex search for the class you want. such as say Vehi. located if i remember 4 bytes after the value in hex will be the ident to an item. make a list of those then you start replacing others with one until you can figure out what is what. cause tags in .maps are really just the idents saved so by changing those you can change say turrets, projectiles, and much more. although for poking calculating the map magic in order to poke is quite abit tricker and i dont feel like explaining that

in my opinion, calculating the magic is a bit easier, since you only need to read three values, sum two of them and subtract the third one, whereas you might need to go through hundreds of tags of a tag class to find the right one. but thats just a matter of opinion.

however unless you know where to get the values in order to calculate the map magic its tricker, since there isnt as easy of pattern to find them. and unless most people are handed the offsets to where those values are its not the easiest to get unless you understand the maps format.

well all recent halo games are based upon the same engine ,the header hasnt changed much since halo3 and documentation of the header can be found on several sites, so i guess you can speak of a certain patter, because you know what to look for. but i agree. if halo4 was completely new game with an own engine and so forth, it would have been extremely difficult to understand the format. thats also the reason why i respect grenadiac and the other modders who did the initial halo 1 research so much. thanks to them, halo modders always had some basic information to base their research on.

I fleshed out the H4 map header on my own yesterday, so I can already calculate magic and various addresses. I'm digging around in a certain app's source right now, so hopefully I can figure out how to poke stuff in maps soon.

Yeah, it's mostly the same as Reach's header except there are 0x10 extra bytes somewhere. If you look near the beginning of this blog entry I made, I have a large amount of Reach's header already mapped out (moreso than Ascension even does).
