I don't think you can play it because it would be unsigned code. Which retails cannot play.

The most that you can do is edit your saved game, and maybe a few texture pack things if you have a modded box. If you search around, people have made inventory/world editors that can do some limited things.

The most you can do on a retail console is edit your saves to get items you aren't supposed to have yet.

There isn't really any cool mods you can do on retail, compared to a modified console.

EDIT: But there are some cool things you can do with Halo game type mods.

Actually, the giant zombie thing don't work anymore but if you have OprzeLP tool you can come and watcha boring tut of mine for advanced modders. Been trying to get money saved up for hd pauvvage.

Not the best but what can you do with a $309 camera that records in 2d & 3d wait for it, wait for it, AVI files. Its images and 2d quality is good but not good enough.  

 

Using my tut, instead of bouncing through nether/overworld and you know exact coordinates you can place two glitched blocks in via world tab wherever you want, mainly decoration.  Also note anything can float through my tut as long as it does not get updated. So place it exactly as you would want it.

 

Block Id / Damage Id  World Tab Only Blocks

 

34/15 = Normal Piston Block / Face on all sides

29/15 = Sticky Piston Block. / Face on all sides

 

 

 

Sticky one kind of bugs out. 

 

Inventory Tab Blocks you can easily place. 

 

43/8 = Glitched Full Stone Slab No sides

43/9 = Glitched Full Sand Slab No sides

 

Above is comparison to how smooth it is. There smooth sandstone. 

 

Sorry, no image for 43/8 but I'm certain i you really want, just hop on oPryzeLp tool & do these mods. 

 

So, yea, I mod minecraft too.

 

Reason i posted it here is that this is the extent I know what savegame modding can do so far. He has found a way to edit grf and made a tool but he ain't gonna share it as two reasons, he is going to make custom maps of his own and the editor he has is not exactly user friendly. Unfortunately.
