Halo 3/ODST/Reach/4 Weapon, Vehicle, and Player Attributes

5 posts in this topic

Not sure if this is the right place on the fourms to ask this, if so then if the topic could be moved or I could be re-directed, that would be appreciated.

I'd like for somebody to extract or direct me to a tool for me to do so and tell me how to extract the weapon, vehicle, and player attribute values for the halo games in a human readable format (I didn't mention Halo CE or 2 since I imagine being on PC getting those values will be much easier).

Weapon damage (shield vs health), ROF, aim assist, bullet magnetism, projectile speed, spread/accuracy modifiers, bloom (for reach/4) levels, regen rates, etc, melee damage and times, reload and switch speeds, player movement speeds and values, health and shield levels and regen rates, and so on, basically every value in each game that defines and effects sandbox balance.

Obviously as these values are tweaked via patches and TU's, i'll need the before/after values for each as well, and if any are different in single player vs. multiplayer or on different targets, I'll need that information.

I basically want to have hard data to use and describe things by when discussing the halo games and when trying to imagine or come up with my own ideas as to how I would balance future games, as well as to create a public resource to view this data, likely in the form of a very, very large png infographic; despite the popularity of the halo franchise, there's huge lack of easy to find information regarding actual values of the in game mechanics.

That what i thought because i thought it was funny when some one said that the mongoose is faster than a warthog when the mongoose max speed is 7 and the warthogs is 9

Pretty much all values you're asking for can be found in Halo's .map files and can be viewed in .map editors like Assembly.

Search for them in tag groups like weap, vehi, bipd and proj.

Now this part is a bit more difficult as im not sure how patches are handled. I guess you would have to extract the contents of the patch and then reverse engineer the changes in Ida Pro.

All of these things require a lot of time and highly doubt that you'll find someone, who will compile this information for you. If you really want this to get done, you probably will have to do it yourself.

Well, to be honest, I kinda assumed that somebody would have already done this. You'd think that this would be one of the first things people do when they mod games like this is find out the base values for these things.

In regards to the first part of your response, is there a particular map editor I should be using for this? And I assume simply looking at the map files in the editor(I already have the map files for 3 and reach, I'll have to remember where I got them so I can get ODST's and 4's) won't have the data be listed in a format that would be obvious as to what they mean, so in regards to that, would I be better off keeping this thread open and asking questions here, or should I ask in the thread for the tool I use?

EDIT: Apparently the resource most people use to get the map files is down, according to another thread here. Don't know if that's the site I used or not, though, but It seems i'm out of luck, regardless. (trying to be as vague as possible here per the rules)

EDIT 2: Got Halo 4's stuff.

Fortunately modders like Zedd have already named most of the important values, so finding and interpreting them shouldn't be too difficult.

The best editor for 3rd gen Halo games (H3, ODST, Reach, H4) is Assembly. You can download the program here: Link

I opened the Halo 4 assault rifle weapon tag and highlighted the rate of fire for you, to show how easy it is to find the right data. Once you get used to the editor, it takes less than a minute to navigate to the desired information.

Feel free to ask to further questions.
