Should i buy this XDK?

29 posts in this topic

Hey Guys!

I found out that taobao sellers can get their hands on XDK's, and i was wondering whether i should get one. I can't translate the language, so i have no idea whether this product is real, and what EXACTLY he's selling.

Here's a link: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.71.effAeJ&id=4692650011&ns=1#detail

Can anyone help? I just need to know what he's saying, and whether its legitimate or not.

The reason I'm collecting one is purely to add to my Xbox collection, and to replace my dead JTAG. There's a couple of questions that i need to ask though:

- What's the difference between the two? I.E can i still run my backup's?

- Is there any real downside between this and a JTAG?

Thanks!

It'll cost about £240 to buy it, ship it, and pay the agent fees. But the question is: Should i buy this instead of a JTAG? It looks like a test kit/XDK but i can't tell from the photos. I really just want something that'll play my backups, and be able to play mods on Halo. The only reason I'm interested in this, is that later down the line, this thing will *hopefully* be a lot more valuable.

*From the translation, it looks like its a 213w power supply, so it should support the sidecar.

Lol taoboo, have fun waiting a month and then getting a pile of shit.

Never get anything from taoboo.

Also, why would you want a dev kit, their more expensive then a RGH or jtag. If you aren't gonna debug some game or make a homebrew app then don't get one. It also won't be able to play retail games without signing the xex fille.

Thanks man!

It was more the fact that they tend to last longer, and i thought that they would be worth more later down the line. Guess i'll just go for the Slim RGH :)

normally a dev may last longer, but to mention about taoboo and why they have so many devs (for that ad 1444 kits) and why they are so cheap. they literally steam them in truck loads as they were being sent off to the dump. since Microsoft takes old kits (or new ones that didnt get used), shoves a screwdriver into one of the ports to break it then takes them to the dump when they dont want them anymore, so these have almost guaranteed been opened to have that one port fixed. and due to their treatment they usually come in fairly poor condition for their cases from being tossed around at times. Phat consoles in general are prone to breaking so the only risk you remove by getting a dev is it doesn't have the stress load/extra heat of running improper software.

if you load the page in google chrome it can translate it for you so you can read it.

there were a lot of questions about these kits around 2009 when devs were more popular due to jtags not existing yet and we tended to call these china kits and quite frown upon them. I knew a few people that had them and for the time they had them it generally wasnt long until something came up like an rrod

Yeah, i can see your points. But i'd still love to own one, and just have it sit there, looking all purty n' stoof.

Shame how they can't connect to Live or PNet anymore, so you'd be stuck playing by yourself, seeing as how the population of people playing modded Halo is at a maximum of 3 at a time. Really wish more people would take the time to setup LiNK and join a lobby, maybe not to host, but atleast show an interest in the service.

Yeah you can do that, but don't get one from china yeah?

Also, it's not that they can't connect anymore.

Pnet is just white listed, but a console that's on the white list, can still go on.

I have kits, I mainly use my XNA but I love having my other kits; as for modding halo I still use my RGH - last time I used my dev kit for modding halo, assembly would randomly disconnect from it.

So, it's really what you want, just don't get one because you want to get on pnet or XBL, cause that's extremely stupid.

So how do other people find the kits, i thought guys had dealers in china or something.

Anyways, i understand how PNeT whitelist's people, its to do with their geographical IP.

Heck, the only reason i wanted one was purely because it would look nice on my desk ;)

I'm just gonna save up for a Slim RGH now :)

Nah not china.

Usually what happens is when a small time developer bankrupts, they sell the kits.

Ah, that makes sense.

But i thought Microsoft took legal action on the developers that did that? (A British firm rings a bell, but i can't remember who it was.)

Yeah. But sometimes devs would be given dev kits as a "closing gift".

Code masters in Australia has closed and someone got 11 of their kits.

devs would be thungs and sell them illegally, yes.

M$ does not care for 360 kits that much anymore, because of the xbone.

That makes me wish they'd been a bit 'careless' and kept some dev stuff on the machines. I'm a sucker for unreleased content.

They do, THQ left a lot of goodies on their kits.

I just want to correct something here.

China kits are not bad depending on who you get it from. Any research can show this. I have bought a few and resold and use personally as well for years. Literally years. pretty much had every console besides a Final slim (left the scene before these came out) and a XNA final. Not one of my kits had any issues besides a few scratches on the case. Majority of the kits are just forced broken by ports IE. Usb, Ethernet, AV, HDMI ect. Nothing internal was messed with. If the repair dude did his job properly, the kit is just as good as if it was new. The who statement about china kits are bad is just simply false. Look at the back of your xbox and tell me where it was manufactured. Bet money it states china, Canada, tiwan, and in rare cases you may find one someone else. But 80% of kits and consoles are made in china. The shipping rate is true, it takes about a month to get it and uses agencies are annoying and sometimes can be frustrating but once you get the kit its actually great besides cosmetic issues. If you want to argue this subject the go right ahead. But from a personal experience, especially from someone who used to resell them, I stand behind my claim 100%.

This is true yes, I got some kits from china as well.

I kinda implied it as if you are new into collating i'd advise not to get one from china as a first kit.

It's a 50% 50%

if you do a proper research it can be a 90-10.

Personally Ive never had any issues. Can't say the same for others but i've bought and sold more than 100 kits through out my time selling and not 1 died to my knowledge. But if someone wants a kit now adays you can find them quite cheap in the states or anywhere outside china as people don't want them anymore do to xbone and other consoles. Just look around is all I have to offer.
